They are basically a marketplace, connecting homeowners with contractors in their area. They may require some business verification, but that is to be expected to make sure they aren’t listing fake businesses. 

Some directories, however, do charge a yearly or monthly fee to list your business on their site. The value of these paid listings can be very situational. So, the higher you rank on each site, the better you look to potential customers. You can fill out your profile with as much detail as possible to get your business to rank higher in the search pages.

Reputation by Association

Just like people make assumptions about other individuals based on who they hang out with, customers will assume things about your business based on the other businesses you are associated with.

For example, if you are a ‘Angi Certified Contractor’, ‘Lowe’s Pro’, ‘Home Depot Certified Installer’, ‘Houzz Pro Contractor’, and a ‘HomeAdvisor Local Pro’, homeowners will automatically assume certain things about your business. They may think “if all these reputable businesses trust them, I can trust them too!” And that’s exactly what we want!

I like to think about business directories like a badge. When you wear the badge, everyone knows without you having to say anything. So don’t tell you customers about it, just put it all over your branded items. They do not post their contractors anywhere online, and they generally only offer your services to their customers once they have already made a purchase. If you can get it to work, it can be a great source for steady work. However, there are a lot of speedbumps you’ll have to deal with before it starts really working for you.

The main reason I’m recommending these is because they are much more difficult to get into, so their approval means a lot more to customers. For example, Lowe’s requires a business license, contractor’s license, background check, and proof of insurance before they’ll approve you as a vendor. Once you get approval, you can post it everywhere!
